Internship Goals and Objectives
In this picture I am explaining an X-ray to a pateint under Dr. McRobert's supervision
Project Goals:
Electronic Documentation Project: To electronically record all important and pertinent documentation currently held in paper files.
Objectives
1) Becoming increasingly efficient running the electronic records system (Eagle Soft)
2) Making it through at least four letters of the alphabet (paper files are organized based on patients’ last name) every week.
3) Constant communication with Dr. McRoberts and Dr. Gus about what information is pertinent to them.
4) Coming in on Friday if the week has been particularly full with appointments.
Social Media (Facebook) Project: Creating a more aesthetically appealing but still easily maneuverable page appropriate for a Dentist with an updating system that can be easily inherited upon my departure as an intern.
Objectives:
1) Using WIX I plan on converting the current plain Facebook page into a more vibrant, inviting advertising tool.
2) Doing research and reading articles on appropriate and effective uses of social media in Dentistry.
3) Discussing, updating, and adding information that is important for patients to be able to access.
4) Developing and documenting a plan for updating statuses, uploading photos, and using other tools social media can offer the office.
5) Finding time during my lunch break or at home to complete the project, making sure Electronic Documentation is the priority.
Skill Goals:
Assessment: To gain professional efficiency in the office’s electronic operating system being able to: add or take away documents, locate important information, view and edit the schedule for the day, and resolve any difficulties that might arise.
Objectives:
1) Exploring the operating system while completing my semester project, scanning in paper documents, to find what different parts mean.
2) Making sure to check the computers around the office regularly to see learn as new things appear.
3) Observe how Dr. McRoberts, the assistants, and the hygienists navigate through the system to gain the information they need to complete their treatment plan.
4) Ask the receptionists and office managers questions about the meanings of certain buttons and shorthand.
Planning: To be able to develop a treatment for a patient’s condition based off observations made via X-rays, examinations, and the patient’s comments, and effectively communicate with receptionists, dentists, assistants, and hygienists to most effectively implement the patient’s treatment plan.
Objectives:
1) Observing what Dr. McRoberts looks for in his various assessment materials, and listening to the observations and explanations he gives to the patient.
2) Asking appropriate questions while in the patient’s consultation and asking not only Dr. McRoberts but the assistants more detailed questions afterwards.
3) Reviewing previous files with X-rays and descriptions and then going over the dentist’s treatment plan.
4) Listening to how the professionals speak and making an active effort to and use proper jargon whenever the opportunity arises so I can get used to it.
Cognitive Goals:
Intervention Development or Implementation: To be able to walk through and describe the various daily procedures such as but not limited to: crowns, extractions, fillings, and root canals. Being able to know the order of events and what tools to use when.
Objectives:
1) Be engaged while observing a procedure making sure to ask questions and listen to Dr. McRoberts and the assistant.
2) Assisting with procedures whenever Dr. McRoberts deems appropriate making sure to:
Ask what tool you are handing him when you are unsure.
Take notice of the different methods he uses to execute a procedure.
Read whenever text is available.
Noticing the differences that can arise and how Dr. McRoberts handles the adversity.
3) Discussing the procedure afterwards with the Assistants and Dr. McRoberts, when available, to go over the steps, exactly what happened, and how the specific procedure varied from the usual.
Intervention Evaluation: To be able to view a patient’s post procedure evaluation and assess the effectiveness of the treatment plan.
Objectives:
1) Be present during follow up appointments reviewing the files before the patient arrives and making sure to listen to all Dr. McRoberts has to say about the situation.
2) Talk with Assistants about what different assessment terms mean.
3) Making an active effort to see patients through from the initial appointment to the procedure to the follow-up.
4) While completing the semester project, take notice of X-rays and read the letters fully explaining the procedures used and how effective they were. Take note of when procedures were not effective and how the adversity was remedied.
Affective Goal:
By the end of this experience I will be able to articulate my feelings about pursuing further studies in the field of dentistry.
Objectives:
1) Having constant discussions with all of the Dentists in the office asking about all aspects of their professional career from undergraduate to present.
2) Reading articles presented to me by dentists in the office.
3) Going on visits to different oral health specialties set up by Dr. McRoberts to better understand all of the possibilities this field has to offer and to better understand how I feel about practicing general dentistry.
4) Shadowing and assisting when appropriate to get hands on experience and see if I can handle the work a dentist does on a daily basis.
5) Doing daily activities such as impressions and waxing a tooth whenever Dr. McRoberts offers to assess my skill’s potential.
