The Staff of Clemson Family Dentistry
Internship Description
At Clemson Family Dentistry I gained hands on experience in the field of Dentistry through a variety of projects and many hours of observation and assistance. My daily activities included shadowing, assisting with dental procedures, and my semester projects. Shadowing consists of me observing the dentists as the go through appointments asking questions and learning from the sidelines. Assisting involves me getting my hands into action providing tools when asked, suction when needed, and getting an up close look at the procedure. This semester, after discussion with Dr. McRoberts, I decided to take on two projects. My first semester project was one of the last steps in transitioning from paper to electronic filing at Clemson Family Dentistry. I took files that were skillfully organized by my preceding intern and organized them within the electronic documentation system. My second semester project was to work on the social media sites for the office. While a Facebook page does exist, there was much work that was done for it to truly represent the excellence displayed daily by Clemson Family Dentistry. Both of these projects have been completed as of the last (working) day in March, March 29th. In addition to these daily activities, I attended various specialties to gain exposure to all fields of oral health including but not limited to: periodontics, endodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics and pediatric surgery. Within the office I also did impressions and created whitening trays. While this includes the full spectrum of planned activities for my internship, Dr. McRoberts took advantage of all impromptu opportunities to show and teach me more about the field of dentistry.
Supervision
Dr. McRoberts is very much an involved preceptor. Time with him in the operatories is constantly supervised with instruction to the activity he is performing and answers to any and all questions that are asked. While I esd working on my semester projects Dr. McRoberts and Ms. Judy, the office manager, made sure to check in and ask about progress, procedures, and any questions I might have.
Evaluation
My performance was briefly assessed at the end of each week through the hour logs. Mid semester there was a progress evaluation with positive accolades and things that I need to work on in the final half. Finally, the course end of semester evaluation was given.
