Issaqueena Pediatric Dentistry
Shadowing at Issaqueena Pediatric Dentistry with Dr. Camille Horton was an awesome experience. It was a thrill to watch how calm and collected Dr. Horton was with each patient. I learned a lot about the problems with dental caries in children, and how ignorance on the parent's part can play a large role in the child's oral health. I got an inside look as to exactly what is different about the pediatric office compared to the general dentist office. Sedation is a large part of the difference. The children that come to Dr. Horton's practice can chose to be sedated to make the experience more relaxing. This is extremely important for children with developmental diseases. The atmosphere is much more fun as well. Disney movies and sing alongs are always on the TV.
Issaqueena Prosthodontics
Shadowing at Issaqueena Prosthodontics was a learning experience. To be honest I had to look up what a prosthodontist was before going to the office, but by the end of the experience I had a much better understanding for what they do. Dr. Craig Horton is very passionate about his field. I was inspired for his enthusiasm when it comes to aesthetic dentistry. He taught me all about what goes into a full mouth reconstruction, dentures, and other forms of dentistry that fall under this category The office was very nice, you could tell that Dr. Horton wanted to set a tone of class a sophistication because he is trying to reach a different client than just a general dentist.
Upstate Oral and Maxilofacial Surgery
Shadowing Drs. Joudeh and Bowie for the day was an eye opening experience. I got to see several realms of oral surgery from wisdom teeth to implants. The work they do can be life changing for their patients. The staff was incredibly nice, and the doctors were held in high esteem. So much so that a couple of dentist came in to have work done on members of their family. There were less tools, but it seemed as though there was more to know. When putting a patient under, they have to handle the medicine and the procedure at the same time with only on nurse on staff starting IVs. As I watched them skillfully handle each procedure, I couldn't help thinking this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. After talking with each doctor about their road to oral surgery and why they love it, I gained a love for it as well. This is definitely a specialty I will be looking at as I work throughout dental school.
Advanced Upstate Endodontics
Shadowing Dr. Pfister was a blast. He is the pinnacle of cool. Besides being an all around awesome person, he is also a great endodontist. It sounded weird at first, but now I understand how it is a good thing his patients tend to dose off during their sometimes hour long root canals. He has such a way of calming his patients before what is probably the most feared dental procedure. I had the privilege of a seeing a case from Clemson Family Dentistry get referred to Dr. Pfister. I watched as the patient underwent her root canal, then met up with her later that afternoon back at Clemson Family Dentistry to watch her crown get put back on. It was neat to see the interworking of the dental community.
Orthodontic Associates of Greenville
Shadowing Dr. Hamby was a lot of fun. Way more fun then the wedgies I use to get from him as a kid (he is my cousin). Orthodontics is a field I am interested in so it was beneficial to get an up close look at all it encompasses. Orthodontists have to be able to fix a patient over a long period of time with constant monitoring. Their measurements have to so exact. The flip side is the results are incredible. People walk out after getting their braces off with the biggest, straightest smile on their face. The staff is incredible and getting a little experience in the wet lab was fun.
